Cryopreserved Cat Sperm Offers Hope for Endangered Feline Species
In this study, scientists wanted to find the best way to freeze and preserve cat sperm from the epididymis (a part of the male reproductive system). They tested different freezing liquids and temperatures. They found that one type of liquid, called extender II, worked better than another. Using glycol as a freezing liquid was better than using glycerol or DMSO. When the frozen sperm was thawed at 37 degrees Celsius, it worked best compared to 30 degrees Celsius. Sperm frozen with glycol and in extender II had good motility (ability to move), some abnormal sperm, and intact acrosomes (important part of the sperm). So, using glycol with extender II and thawing at 37 degrees Celsius could be the best way to freeze cat sperm from the epididymis.
