Monsoon Shifts Threaten Food and Water Security Across Asia
The Indian Monsoon and East Asian Monsoon vary independently on short-term and long-term scales. By analyzing oxygen isotopes in cave formations from Oman and China, researchers found that the Indian Monsoon and East Asian Monsoon have different patterns over the past 780 years. The stalagmites from Oman reflect the Indian Monsoon, while those from China indicate the East Asian Monsoon. This shows that the two monsoons do not always change in sync, but can have asynchronous variations.
