Underutilized tree space leads to decreased diversity in forest shrubs.
The researchers studied the stand layer index and species diversity of shrubs in different age groups of Cunninghamia lanceolata plantations. They found that as the trees grew, the diversity of shrub species increased and then decreased. The stand layer index was low, indicating underutilized vertical space and weak individual differentiation. The richness of shrub species was significantly influenced by the stand layer index.
