The article explores the origin and evolution of Chinese characters "zuo" (作) and "zuo" (做). Originally, "做" was a polyphone with three pronunciations, one of which was similar to "作". Over time, the pronunciation of "做" changed to have two pronunciations, one of which matched "作". In modern Chinese, both "做" and "作" have merged their different pronunciations. Some meanings of "作" were transferred to "做", expanding their shared meanings. This study aims to uncover the history of these characters and encourage further research on modern Chinese language.
