Farmland expansion threatens grasslands in Yinshan Mountain region.
The researchers analyzed changes in landscape patterns at the northern foot of Yinshan Mountain between 1995 and 2000 using data from the Remote Sense Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. They found that farmland area increased, grassland area decreased, and unused land area grew rapidly. The landscape became more diverse, with differences among landscape types increasing. Farmland and grassland were the main types, typical of an agro-pastoral region. The ratio of farmland, grassland, and forestry land was 1:0.14:4. The fractal dimension of farmland fluctuated with its area increase.
