Acidic soils in South China limit crop growth due to high aluminum levels. Urea fertilizer quickly raises soil pH and reduces toxic aluminum, benefiting maize growth. pH increase is temporary, dropping slowly after peaking. Urea application for 2-4 weeks significantly alters soil pH and reduces aluminum toxicity in a short time.
