New Maize Strain Boosts Photosynthesis, Promises Higher Crop Yields.
Two types of maize plants were studied to understand why one had a higher photosynthetic rate than the other. The plant with better photosynthesis had taller height, larger leaves, and more efficient use of light. Surprisingly, the plant with lower photosynthesis had higher CO2 levels inside its leaves. The difference in photosynthesis was not due to how open their stomata were, but likely because of how they used light.
