The researchers studied the phytoplankton community in Xiaoxingkai Lake to understand its impact on the water quality of Daxingkai Lake. They found 121 different phytoplankton species, with cyanobacteria and diatoms being the most common. The diversity of phytoplankton was highest in May and lowest in September. Human activities in the area decreased phytoplankton diversity.
