Unplanted wetlands show limited ability to purify water pollutants effectively
A study tested two types of unplanted wetlands to clean water. They used different materials as a base to see which worked better. The wetlands removed some pollutants, but not enough for long-term cleaning. Most pollutants were removed in the top 90 cm of the wetlands. The amount of water and the base material affected how well the wetlands cleaned the water. The tests to choose the best base material didn't show the full cleaning ability of the wetlands.
