Hot pepper plant extracts inhibit seed germination of pepper and tomato.
A study looked at how extracts from different parts of hot pepper plants affect the growth of hot pepper and tomato seeds. The extracts had different effects depending on the plant part and concentration used. Overall, the extracts inhibited seed germination of both hot pepper and tomato plants. The strongest inhibitory effect came from the leaf extract of hot pepper. This shows that hot pepper plants can harm their own seeds and those of tomato plants through chemicals in their extracts.
