Photosynthesis Levels Linked to Higher Rice Yields in Groundbreaking Study.
Photosynthesis in rice plants affects grain yield. The study looked at 32 types of rice in Liaoning province. They found that the photosynthesis of certain leaves and panicle types was linked to higher yields. The flag leaf's photosynthesis during heading and the second leaf during filling were important. Erect and semi-erect panicle types had better photosynthesis late in the season. The amount of photosynthesis in the flag leaf during heading should be between 17-22 μmol/(m2·s) for most types. Having the right leaf area index (LAI) during tillering, jointing, heading, and ripening stages also led to higher yields. The ideal LAI during jointing and heading was between 2.8-4.0 and 5.5-6.3, respectively.
