Study Reveals Vast Disparities in Soil Carbon Storage Across Northeast China
The researchers studied the amount and distribution of organic carbon in the topsoil of the Northeast main black soil area. They used GIS technology to estimate the carbon density and storage in different soil types. The carbon density ranged from 2.43 to 11.36 kg·m-2, with an average of 6.27 kg·m-2. In total, about 2.92×108t of carbon was stored in the topsoil. The amount of carbon varied significantly across different districts, with higher levels in the northeast (Nenjiang and Wudalianchi) and lower levels in the southwest (Gongzhuling).
