Greenhouses Boost Crop Yields, Improve Farmer Livelihoods in Jingzhou City
In summer, researchers compared how plastic and glass greenhouses in Jingzhou City affect the local climate. They found that both types of greenhouses made the air and soil inside warmer while also increasing humidity compared to outside. However, glass greenhouses performed better at maintaining a stable microclimate than plastic ones. Inside plastic greenhouses, temperatures were about 0.2 to 2.1 degrees Celsius warmer than outside, while in glass greenhouses, the difference was from 0.4 to 2.7 degrees. Humidity was also higher inside both types of greenhouses. Surprisingly, the amount of sunlight reaching the plants was lower inside the greenhouses, with plastic getting only 34 to 46% and glass getting 45 to 80% of the outside light.
