Hainan's ecological deficit reveals unsustainable development, but diversity boosts resource efficiency and economic output.
The scientists in Hainan Province studied how people and nature interact in 2003. They found that each person used 2.1338 hectares of land but the land could only support 1.3111 hectares per person. This means there was a shortage of 0.8227 hectares per person in some areas. In 12 places, they used more land than they had, while in 6 areas, they had extra land. Hainan's ways of using resources weren’t very efficient. By looking at the variety of land use, they could predict how well the economy would do. To have a better economy, they need to use resources wisely, and this can help them be more sustainable. The team suggested ways to make sure the province develops in a way that keeps nature healthy for the long term.
