Salinity levels impact shrimp spawning and growth rates significantly.
Female Exopalaemon carinicauda shrimps were studied to see how different levels of salt in the water affect their reproduction and growth. The shrimps could lay eggs at most salt levels, but not at very low salt. The best salt levels for egg hatching were between 10 and 20. The baby shrimps grew best in salt levels between 5 and 30. The size of the shrimps was biggest at salt levels of 15 and 20. The shrimps grew fastest at salt levels between 5 and 20, but not at very high salt levels. The shrimps' bodies worked hardest to balance salt levels at very high and very low salt levels. Overall, the shrimps can reproduce in many different salt levels, but grow best in salt levels close to their natural environment.
