Enclosure duration in grasslands leads to decreased plant diversity and degradation.
Enclosing grassland areas for different lengths of time affects the types of plants that grow there. The longer the area is fenced off, the more diverse the plant species become. Plots fenced in 1999 and 1979 had higher plant diversity compared to those fenced in 2004. The biomass of different plant types also increased over time, with plots fenced in 1999 and 1979 having higher biomass than those fenced in 2004. This change in plant composition could lead to a decrease in the value of the grassland and contribute to its degradation due to invasion by shrubs and sub-shrubs.
