The scientists used a tool called SWAT to study pollution in the Chaihe reservoir area. They found that runoff, sediment, and pollution were accurately simulated by the model. The pollution was mainly from fertilizer and livestock in areas with lots of farming. The pollution was worse in the middle and downstream parts of the watershed.
