Nanjing's ecological footprint poses no local threat, but global sustainability concerns revealed.
The article applied a method called Ecological Footprint Analysis to measure if Nanjing's ecological development in 1998 was sustainable. The study calculated how much resources the city used (ecological footprint) and compared it to the environment's capacity to support that usage (ecological carrying capacity). The results showed that Nanjing's resource demands in 1998 did not harm its own environment, but could affect the broader ecosystem negatively.
