Arid region cotton fields face changing water and salinity levels during freeze-thaw season.
The study looked at how water, temperature, and salt levels change in soil used for drip irrigation with cotton during the winter. They found that the soil freezes from November to February, with the surface freezing first and melting last. The temperature difference between the top and bottom of the soil can be almost 20 degrees Celsius. During freezing, water and salt levels increase in the top 60 centimeters of soil. When the soil thaws, the changes in water and salt levels are more complex. The salt levels in the top soil change more than in the deeper soil layers. This information can help improve soil quality and irrigation practices for agriculture in arid regions.
