Groundwater extraction in Hamedan-Bahar plain exceeds recharge rates, risking depletion.
Groundwater extraction in the Hamedan-Bahar plain has caused a significant drop in water levels over the past three decades. Researchers calculated water extraction and estimated groundwater recharge based on crop types and irrigation systems. Data from 2132 wells was collected and analyzed using ArcGIS software. Results showed that groundwater recharge volumes were lower than extraction volumes in all seasons, with summer having the highest extraction rates. This imbalance poses a threat to the sustainability of the aquifer in the region.
