Urbanization in northwest China affects water resources, especially groundwater. A study in Wuwei City found that urbanization in the middle of the Shiyang River Basin impacts downstream groundwater more than midstream. The way urban areas use water also affects groundwater. To balance urban growth with water resources and the environment, we need to manage water resources carefully in inland river basins.
