Farmland Vanishing Amid Economic Growth, Threatening Food Security in Jiangsu
The study analyzed changes in cultivated land in Jiangsu Province from 1996 to 2006. It found that despite economic growth, cultivated land continued to decrease due to changes in agricultural structure and non-agricultural construction. The areas with the most land loss were also the areas experiencing the most economic growth. The main ways cultivated land was added were through land development and reclamation, with more land expected to be allocated for cultivation in the future. The study suggests policies to protect cultivated land in Jiangsu Province.
