Water stress reduces maize photosynthesis, threatening food security worldwide.
Water stress negatively affects the photosynthesis of maize plants. The study looked at two types of maize and found that under water stress, the plants had lower photosynthetic rates and efficiency. The fluorescence of chlorophyll in the leaves increased, indicating stress. The ability of the plants to transport electrons for photosynthesis decreased, leading to lower overall photosynthesis. The plants also used non-photochemical methods to dissipate excess light and protect themselves from damage.
