Diverse phytoplankton communities in Yangtze River Estuary impacted by seasonal environmental factors.
The researchers studied phytoplankton in the Jiuduansha Wetland and nearby waters. They found 139 species, with diatoms being the most common. Phytoplankton biomass was lowest in winter and highest in spring. Skeletonema costatum was the dominant species in all seasons. Water temperature limited growth in winter, while salinity promoted growth in spring. Summer flows provided nutrients for phytoplankton.
