The elevation of Tongguan in the Sanmenxia Reservoir area affects flood control and other benefits. Natural cut-offs in the river have increased local slopes, leading to erosion and raising Tongguan elevation. A cut-off in 2002 is expected to lower Tongguan elevation by about 0.12 meters after reservoir operations.
