Sewage sludge boosts growth but increases heavy metal accumulation in oilseed rape
The researchers studied how adding sewage sludge to soil contaminated with cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) affected the growth and Cd/Pb accumulation in oilseed rape plants. They found that high Cd/Pb levels in soil slowed plant growth, but sewage sludge helped plants grow better. Both oilseed rape species accumulated more Cd and Pb in sewage sludge-amended soil. When Pb was present in Cd-contaminated soil, Cd accumulation in plant tissues increased. However, higher Cd levels in soil reduced Pb accumulation in plants.
