The study used computer software to model how coal mining affects rocks above it in Wanli mining area. They found that mining one coal seam can cause fractures in the rock above another seam, leading to water flowing fractures up to 40 meters deep. The height predicted by a formula was close to the actual measurement of 45 meters. The researchers divided the mining area into different zones based on water levels and suggested techniques to protect water sources during mining.
