Forests Prevent Floods and Soil Erosion, Safeguarding Communities in Karst Regions
A study in Yuxi city analyzed runoff and sediment yields from different vegetation types in a karst region. Results showed that rainfall in the rainy season made up most of the total rainfall. Shrub grassland and natural secondary forest reduced runoff significantly compared to slope farmland and artificial forest. Secondary forest was found to be most effective in reducing soil erosion. Plantations with multiple layers of vegetation are recommended for optimal benefits.
