Floating plants clean polluted water faster than ever imagined, study finds.
Floating plants like water hyacinth and water lettuce can help clean up polluted water by absorbing excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. In a study, these plants were grown in contaminated water and were found to be effective in removing these nutrients. Water hyacinth and water lettuce were the best at purifying the water, with water hyacinth removing 57% of nitrogen and 52% of phosphorus, and water lettuce removing 63% of nitrogen and 50% of phosphorus. These plants also helped improve water clarity faster compared to other floating plants. Overall, floating plants show promise in cleaning up polluted water bodies.
