Sandy desertification in Xinjiang rapidly progressing, threatening land and livelihoods.
The study used satellite images to track changes in sandy desert areas in Pishan, Xinjiang from 1989 to 2005. They classified different types of desert land and measured their sizes over time. The results show that severe sandy desert areas are increasing faster than non-desert areas, indicating rapid desertification in the region.
