Single dominant phytoplankton species threatens biodiversity in Yangtze River estuary.
The researchers studied the types of tiny plants in the water near the Yangtze River. They found 133 different species, with most belonging to a group called diatoms. One species called Skeletonema costatum was very common in the water. Its high numbers made the overall plant community less diverse and simpler. The researchers also noticed that the plants preferred different types of water environments.
