The article gives an overview of how the Pearl River estuary has been managed over the years. It describes the characteristics of the estuary and the different plans made for its regulation since the 1950s. The current planning focuses on individual outlets rather than a comprehensive approach. By looking at past experiences and future needs, potential issues with the regulation are identified. To address these problems, new ideas and measures are suggested to ensure the estuary is used in a sustainable and healthy way.
