Contour tillage slashes nitrogen runoff, revolutionizing soil conservation efforts.
Different tillage methods were tested to see how they affect nitrogen loss in runoff. Results showed that using a combination of straight and contour tillage reduced runoff by up to 59.63%. The total nitrogen loss was not significantly different between the tillage methods, but when rainfall was less than 5.12 hours, the 4 m straight tillage 4 m contour tillage method was the most effective. Soluble nitrogen was the main form of nitrogen lost in runoff, and its proportion varied with rainfall intensity and duration. Overall, the total nitrogen and soluble nitrogen losses were significantly lower with the different tillage methods compared to total straight tillage.
