The study compared hybrid late japonica rice and conventional late-maturing middle japonica rice in Jiangsu province. Hybrid rice had bigger spikes, more grains, higher yield, and lower seed setting rate compared to conventional rice. However, the quality of hybrid rice, except for grain shape, was generally lower than that of conventional rice. The study also discussed the challenges and future direction of hybrid late japonica rice in Jiangsu province.
