Sediment transport in Pearl River Estuary reveals surprising environmental impact.
Surface sediment characteristics in Lingdingyang Bay were studied using samples collected in 2004. The dominant bed material type is clayey silt. Sediment transport trends show a southwestward direction, with complex patterns influenced by runoff, tidal currents, wind waves, and salty water. Sediments in different zones vary in coarseness, with the center zone being the maximum turbidity zone. Sediments in the southern zone of Qi’ao Island and the eastern zone of Macau Peninsula transport westward. The Dayu Strait and outer Lingding Island are main inlets of high salinity water, with sediments transporting northwest.
