Sichuan's Urbanization Threatens Farmland, Risking Food Security
The study looked at how urban growth in Sichuan province affected the amount of farmland from 1978 to 2011. Results showed that as cities expanded, the total area of farmland decreased. The relationship between urban growth and farmland change was not really balanced. For every unit of increase in urbanization, the farmland decreased by about 5.7 units. This means that as cities grew, farmland shrank. The study found that as time passed, the level of balance between urban growth and farmland change changed too, sometimes being well-coordinated and sometimes not. Based on these results, suggestions were made to better manage the relationship between urban growth and farmland in the future.
