Transitioning farmland to forest land improves regional land quality in China.
Land use changes in Zhangbei County, Hebei Province were studied to understand their impact on land quality. Remote sensing data was used to analyze changes in cultivated land from 1999 to 2003. The study found that most cultivated land turned into grassland and forest, leading to improved land quality. However, transitions from forest to farmland and grassland to irrigated farmland showed degradation. Overall, transitions to grassland and forest land improved regional land quality.
