A new rice plant called Mianhui 2040 was created by crossing two different types of rice plants. It has strong abilities to produce a lot of hybrid seeds, resist a disease called blast, and grow well in different conditions. Mianhui 2040 is similar to another popular rice plant called Minghui 63 but grows faster. Two new rice hybrids made with Mianhui 2040 were approved for use in Sichuan Province in 2000 and 2002.
