China's Urbanization Lags Industrialization, Regional Disparities Require Tailored Policies.
Urbanization in China is not keeping up with industrialization, but the gap has been narrowing since the country's reform and opening-up. In 2003, the two were most in sync, but since then, urbanization has been falling behind industrialization. Different regions have different situations, with the eastern and central regions lagging behind, the northeast region leading, and the western region being the most balanced. To achieve a coordinated development of urbanization and industrialization, different regions need different policies.
