Soil and Water Conservation Slashes Sediment Discharge in Yangtze River Basin
The study looked at how soil and water conservation efforts in the Jialingjiang River Basin affected runoff and sediment levels. Before 1989, the river had high runoff and sediment discharge, but after conservation measures were implemented, both decreased significantly. From 1992 to 1998, the average annual runoff decreased to 5.61×10^10 m^3, and sediment discharge dropped to 4.8×10^10 kg. This shows that soil and water conservation efforts have successfully reduced soil and water losses in the basin.
