The pollution in Dongting Lake is heavy, especially with TN and TP. After the Three Gorges closure, nitrogen and phosphorus removal in sewage treatment plants should be increased. TP is the main contributor to pollution risk in the lake, followed by Cu. The overall ecological harm is slight, but West Dongting Lake faces serious pollution risk. East and South Dongting Lakes have lower pollution risks.
