Maize field study reveals key factors driving soil respiration fluctuations
Soil respiration in a maize field was studied during the maize growth seasons in 2004 and 2005. The researchers found that soil respiration varied throughout the day and season, with temperature and moisture being the main factors influencing it. Leaf area and root biomass also played a role in soil respiration rates. Soil properties like organic content and nitrogen levels had less impact. Adding nitrogen fertilizer increased soil respiration.
