The wetland landscape in Songnen Plain has changed significantly from 1980 to 2000. The area of wetlands has decreased by 33.1% in the past 21 years. The average size of wetland patches has decreased, while the shape of the landscape has become more irregular. The patches have shifted southwestward by 49.82 km, and the orientation of the landscape has rotated anticlockwise. These changes indicate that the wetlands are becoming more fragmented and shrinking due to both natural and human factors.
