Phosphorus pollution in Chaohu Lake linked to urban sewage discharge.
Phosphorus levels in Chaohu Lake sediments have increased over the past 150 years, with higher concentrations in the west and north regions. The main source of pollution is sewage from Heifei City, especially via the Nanfei River. The type of phosphorus linked to human activity has increased significantly since 1980, particularly in the central region of the lake. The study shows that human pollution has had a significant impact on the lake's sediment composition.
