Taller Coal Mines Boost Productivity, But Threaten Stability of Overhead Rock
The study used a computer program to look at how the top layer of coal moves in a specific mining area. They found that as the mining height increased, the top coal moved further and in a different direction. Adding more support underground made the lower top coal move more, which helped to create cracks in the top coal layer.
