Excessive nitrogen use threatens groundwater safety, new study reveals.
The study looked at how controlling water and nitrogen in the topsoil affects the movement of nitrate in deep soil in north China. They used labeled nitrogen in a field experiment with different nitrogen levels and irrigation methods. The results showed that less nitrogen and proper water stress helped maize roots grow deeper, absorbing nitrate from deep soil. Excess nitrogen and traditional irrigation methods can lead to nitrate accumulation in deep soil, posing a risk to groundwater.
