Longer Slopes Reduce Runoff, Conserving Water in Dry Regions
This study looked at how the length of a slope affects runoff when it rains. They set up different lengths of slopes (between 1 and 10 meters long) and tested how much water ran off them during different rainfall intensities. They found that the time it took for runoff to start did not change with slope length. In the beginning, runoff decreased with longer slopes due to high soil absorption. During heavy rain, all slope lengths had similar runoff amounts. Towards the end, longer slopes had less runoff because the rain was lighter. Overall, longer slopes can reduce the amount of water running off hills during certain parts of a rainfall but not all the time.
