Heavy metals in Yangtze River tributaries threaten soil and water quality.
The study looked at heavy metals in sediment from Yangtze River tributaries in Anhui Province. They found that these sediments have high levels of heavy metals, with Cd being over 30 times more concentrated than in surface soils. The sediments are a major source of heavy metals in the soil of the river plain, especially Cd. This natural enrichment of Cd in the soil along the Yangtze River is a significant concern.
