Wetland area in arid China stabilizes with human intervention and climate.
The researchers used 3S technology to study changes in the wetland landscape of Junggar's inland water in Xinjiang from 1975 to 2009. They found that the wetland area increased slightly overall during this time, with diversity in landscape pattern increasing. The dominance index decreased, fragment index initially increased then decreased, and patch shape became more complex. River and lake wetland areas fluctuated, while marsh wetland area remained stable and artificial wetland area decreased. The wetland landscape was influenced by water resource cycles and human activities, but overall remained stable due to favorable climate conditions and reasonable human activities in the arid northwest region of China.
