New fertilizer raises soil pH and metal content, impacting crop growth.
The study looked at how percarbamide affects soil pH and metal content in acidic and alkaline soils in China. They found that in acidic soils, pH increased quickly and metal content decreased at first before gradually increasing. In alkaline soils, pH initially rose, then fell, and rose again, with less fluctuation than in acidic soils. The availability of metals like Mn, Cu, and Zn in acidic soils decreased with higher pH, while Ca and Mg content increased. However, in alkaline soils, the changes were less pronounced. Overall, applying percarbamide as a fertilizer did not have negative effects on metal availability in the soils tested.
